Cable Termination or Jointing Kit? Know the Difference Cable termination or jointing kit; which one does your project need? Although both are used in power cable systems, they serve different purposes. A termination kit connects a cable to electrical equipment. A jointing kit connects two cable sections. Therefore, choosing the right kit is vital for oil...
Proactive Operations and Maintenance for Reliable Power Systems Proactive Operations and Maintenance helps keep critical power systems ready when they are needed most. For oil and gas companies, international oil companies, indigenous operators, and EPC contractors, reliable power is vital to safe and efficient operations. However, power systems do not stay reliable on their own....
Power System Reliability: From Installation to Maintenance Power System Reliability starts with more than choosing the right equipment. It depends on how a system is designed, installed, tested, commissioned, and maintained throughout its operating life. In addition, for oil and gas companies, international oil companies, indigenous operators, and EPC contractors, this approach is especially important....

Raychem HVOT and SCTM support insulation, screening, and protection in high-voltage cable systems. In oil and gas facilities, electrical networks must perform under demanding conditions. Therefore, the right cable accessories can help protect critical connections and support long-term system performance.
Therefore, Raychem HVOT and SCTM serve different but complementary roles. HVOT provides an insulating and protective outer layer, while SCTM helps restore the semi-conductive screen and manage the electrical field around the cable system. Together, they form part of Raychem’s cable accessory technology for medium- and high-voltage applications. TE Connectivity documentation identifies Raychem HVOT as a non-tracking tubing used for environmental protection in cable terminations, while SCTM is used within Raychem termination systems for stress-control functions.
For International Oil Companies (IOCs), Indigenous Oil and Gas Operators, EPC Contractors, and other industrial users, this distinction matters. After all, a cable termination is more than an end connection. It is a critical part of the electrical system.
Raychem HVOT is a high-voltage outdoor tubing solution used in Raychem cable termination systems. In particular, it provides insulation and environmental protection around exposed cable termination areas.
Consequently, HVOT can help protect electrical insulation from outdoor conditions such as moisture, contamination, and other environmental exposure. TE Connectivity describes Raychem HVOT tubing as non-tracking tubing that provides environmental protection in its medium-voltage termination systems.
For oil and gas facilities, this protection can be valuable around outdoor substations, switchgear connections, cable terminations, and other exposed electrical equipment.
Raychem HVOT can support applications that require:
As a result, HVOT can help create a stronger protective barrier around critical cable termination areas.
Raychem SCTM is used within Raychem cable accessory systems to support electrical stress control and semi-conductive screening.
The semi-conductive screen plays an important role in controlling the electrical field around a high-voltage cable. Therefore, restoring the screen correctly during cable termination or jointing is essential to maintaining the intended electrical performance of the cable system.
Raychem termination systems use SCTM stress-control technology alongside HVOT environmental protection. TE Connectivity’s product documentation specifically identifies Raychem SCTM as part of its stress-control technology for medium-voltage cable terminations.
Raychem SCTM can support:
Therefore, SCTM is an important part of the transition between the cable insulation system and the termination.
Although Raychem HVOT and SCTM are used together in some cable accessory systems, they perform different functions.
| Solution | Primary Role | Application Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| HVOT | Insulation and environmental protection | It helps protect exposed termination areas |
| SCTM | Semi-conductive screening and stress control | This helps manage the electrical field around the cable |
In simple terms, HVOT focuses on insulation and environmental protection, while SCTM focuses on screening and electrical stress control.
As a result, both technologies can contribute to the overall performance of a properly designed cable termination system.
Oil and gas facilities rely on electrical systems to support production, processing, pumping, instrumentation, utilities, and other critical operations.
At the same time, these systems can operate in challenging environments. Outdoor equipment may face moisture, contamination, temperature changes, and other environmental conditions.
Therefore, cable terminations need suitable insulation and protection.
Raychem HVOT and SCTM address different parts of this requirement. HVOT provides an external protective insulation layer, while SCTM supports stress control and screen continuity within the termination system.
For EPC Contractors, this can also simplify the selection of compatible cable accessory technologies during project design and installation. Raychem termination families are available for different cable types and voltage classes, so product selection should always match the cable design and project requirements.
A cable termination must manage several functions at the same time. It must provide electrical insulation, control electrical stress, protect the cable from the environment, and maintain the mechanical integrity of the connection.
For this reason, each component matters.
Raychem SCTM supports stress control and screening functions. Meanwhile, Raychem HVOT provides insulation and environmental protection. Together, where specified as part of a Raychem termination system, these technologies help address key electrical and environmental requirements.
Furthermore, TE Connectivity offers Raychem outdoor termination systems across a range of voltage classes and cable configurations.
The right cable accessory depends on the cable construction, voltage rating, insulation diameter, conductor size, installation environment, and termination design.
Therefore, selecting a product based only on its name is not enough.
Instead, project teams should review the technical requirements and select the appropriate Raychem accessory for the specific cable and application.
For oil and gas operators and EPC Contractors, this approach can help reduce installation issues and support better electrical system performance throughout the project lifecycle.

High-voltage cable systems depend on more than the cable itself. The termination and its components also play a vital role.
Raychem HVOT and SCTM provide complementary technologies for insulation, environmental protection, screening, and electrical stress control.
As a result, they can form an important part of cable termination systems used in demanding industrial and energy applications.
For oil and gas operators, IOCs, Indigenous Operators, and EPC Contractors, choosing the right cable accessory is ultimately about more than installation. It is about protecting critical electrical infrastructure and supporting the performance of the wider power system.
